BWP vs BWR Plywood
BWP (Boiling Water Proof) and BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) are the two plywood grades that matter for home interiors in India. Both are hardwood plywood; the difference is the adhesive and how long the bonded panel survives water exposure — which decides where each belongs in your home.

What the grades actually mean
The IS 710 (BWP/marine) and IS 303 (BWR/MR) standards test how long a glued panel survives boiling water before the plies separate. No cabinet lives in boiling water — the test is a proxy for years of sink leaks, steam, wet mopping and Bengaluru's humid monsoons. BWP's phenolic resin is thermoset and essentially waterproof; BWR resists moisture but will delaminate under sustained wetting. “Marine ply” in shop talk is BWP; “commercial ply” usually means MR grade, a step below BWR and best kept out of kitchens entirely.
Where each belongs — and where HDHMR fits
The practical rule: anything that can get wet — kitchen base units, the sink cabinet, utility and bathroom vanities — should be BWP. Dry-area wardrobes, TV units and bookshelves are fine in BWR, and that mix is how sensible BOQs control cost. HDHMR (high-density HMR board) is a dense fibreboard that machines beautifully for shutters and routed patterns at a mid price, but for load-bearing carcasses in wet zones, BWP plywood's screw-holding and moisture performance still leads.
How to verify what you're getting
Ask for the brand and grade per line item in the BOQ — “branded ply” is not a specification. Branded BWP sheets carry an IS 710 stamp and the manufacturer's lot markings on the face; you can check them at delivery or during a factory visit.
